PRESERVATION UPDATE: GVVT completes garage purchase

The Glasgow Vintage Vehicle Trust has completed the purchase of Bridgeton Bus Garage — its home from formation in late 2002 — from City Property Glasgow (Investments), an arms-length organisation of Glasgow City Council.

‘This is such good news for the trust,’ says chairman Steven Booth. ‘We have been working hard to progress the purchase of the garage for some time. We have always thought that ownership of the building represents the best option for our long-term future and in doing so provides a secure home for the large collection of vehicles.

‘It is a building made for looking after buses and other large vehicles. It is steeped in transport heritage as it was the last bus garage in the city built by Glasgow Corporation. It is ideal for our purposes to continue the work we are doing and to develop our concept of creating a working museum for visitors to enjoy.’

The garage opened in June 1965, the last of four built as part of Glasgow Corporation Transport’s replacement of trams with buses between 1957 and 1962. Greater Glasgow PTE closed it in May 1976, after which it became a depot for Strathclyde Regional Council’s internal transport department. GVVT has leased the premises since early 2003.
