PRESERVATION UPDATE: Coronavirus ravages rally season


Government advice on controlling the coronavirus pandemic brought this year’s rally season to an abrupt halt in mid-March, with the widespread cancellation of rallies and running days into June and the temporary closure of museums.

What might have been: The Teesside 500 Group’s 1958 Dennis Loline I, Northern Counties-bodied Middlesbrough Corporation 99 (JDC 599), on the transporter bridge during a Teesside Vintage Bus Running Day in 2011.

The situation escalated between last month’s Buses and 2020/21 Museum & Rally Guide being printed and going on sale. The South East Bus Festival, the London Bus Museum’s Spring Gathering, the Cumbria Easter Rally, events at the Sandtoft Trolleybus Museum and Wythall Transport Museum and in Oxford, Dorking, Manchester and Lincoln were cancelled at short notice.
