INSIDE TRACK: Good times will return

By the time you read this, all our lives will have been dominated for two months by coronavirus. You will not have been able to open a newspaper, search the internet or walk down the street without constant reminders of this natural menace that will probably change all our lives forever.

But with new cases hopefully in steep decline and the country taking tentative steps towards an exit from lockdown, I believe we are entering a period where there will be significant opportunities for bus and coach operators of all sizes, in particular the independent sector.

The past few months have seen the demise of too many operators, faced with impossible pressure on cash flow and for many coach operators in particular the disappearance of virtually all their work almost overnight. The loss of any operator is sad.

But there will be opportunities for those that survive, and the rewards will be there for those willing to seize the moment.

There is an emerging consensus that demand for public transport will not return immediately to pre-lockdown levels, even if all the restrictions are removed overnight – which almost certainly will not happen.
