Many stakeholders, including the Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT) and the Campaign for Better Transport, called on the government to produce a national bus strategy. What might it say? Imagine if the opening paragraph said: ‘We want to make bus travel the natural choice for shorter journeys, or as part of a longer journey. This government’s approach to delivering our ambition for bus travel is one of partnership. We believe that by working closely with our partners in local bodies, the third sector and the wider public and private sector, we can develop a strong basis for achieving our ambition for bus travel.’ That would be impressive. Those words are indeed in the opening paragraph of a Department for Transport strategy document, except I have substituted ‘bus travel’ for ‘cycling and walking’.
