Halton folds after 111 years

Six-figure loss leaves just eight arms length municipals

The already depleted ranks of arms length council-owned operators fell again on 24 January when Halton Transport, serving the towns of Widnes and Runcorn, was closed and put into liquidation.

Eleven of Halton’s buses — Scania OmniCity, Alexander Dennis Enviro200s and an East Lancs-bodied Dart — locked in the depot after the company closed.

The demise of the smallest of the three remaining arms length municipals in northwest England leaves just eight in England, Wales and Scotland — Blackpool Transport, Cardiff Bus, Ipswich Buses, Lothian Buses, Newport Transport, Nottingham City Transport, Reading Buses and Warrington’s Own Buses, of which Lothian and Nottingham are the largest and Blackpool uniquely operates trams and buses.
