TrawsCymru should be part of a national network

As the author of the TrawsCymru strategic review, analysed by Rhodri Clark (Buses November), I would like to comment on two points he made and expand on my vision for the network. I would stress that this is a personal view, and not necessarily that of the Welsh government or Transport for Wales. 

He finds it surprising that my review makes no recommendation for withdrawal of any TrawsCymru services. As a consultant, I was given a brief to address which was specific in its requirements and did not require recommendations for reducing the network size. Personally, however, I think that the T9 (Cardiff-Cardiff Airport) should not be part of the TrawsCymru network and I would question whether, as we move towards zero carbon, subsidy should be used to encourage people to fly.

 Secondly, he finds it ‘curious’ that the review lists the largest towns in Wales without a rail or TrawsCymru service. The review explains the logic behind this. Most of the suggestions for new TrawsCymru services were made largely on the basis that it was a good idea, or would join together existing services.
