Stagecoach orders Volvo 9700 double-deckers

Stagecoach has become the first UK fleet customer for Volvo’s 9700DD integral double-deck coach, with 43 of the longer 14.8m version due for delivery in 2024/25.

The order —details are revealed in British Bus Publishing’s 2024 Stagecoach Bus Handbook produced in close cooperation with the operator —is shared between four regional operating companies.

Thirty for Megabus and/or Scottish Citylink services will go to the three Scottish fleets and the Walkergate, Newcastle depot of Stagecoach North East, while 13 are destined for the East Scotland company’s depots at Aberhill and Glenrothes which currently operate high-capacity single-deck coaches on limited stop services connecting Fife with Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee. Some coaches run at full capacity at peak times when double-deck buses (Alexander Dennis Enviro400s) also are used.

The 9700DD was launched in 2020 and is a Volvo design built by Finnish coachbuilder Carrus Delta in Lieto, a city 100miles west of Helsinki. It has a 13litre Volvo D13K engine developing either 460 or 500hp, matched to I-Shift automated transmission. Besides the 14.8m version with up to 96 seats, it also is available at 13m and is offered in two heights, the 4m international standard for doubledeck coaches and at 4.2m (13ft 9in) for Scandinavia.
