IN SEARCH OF SOUTHDOWN

For the third and final part of his travels through the South Downs national park*, CHRISTOPHER CARTER is frustrated in his attempt to sample an independent’s service and instead rides seven Stagecoach buses from Pulborough to Guildford via Midhurst, Chichester, Winchester and Alton

Part two ended with me waiting expectantly for a two-tone green South Downs Connectionsliveried Stagecoach route 1 bus in Pulborough on the South Downs national park’s northern border.

Stagecoach South upgraded the route in 2017, introducing four more spacious Alexander Dennis Enviro300s with free Wi-Fi and E-Leather, but that is not what turns up at my stop. Instead, a standard Enviro300 in corporate livery greets me with the message ‘Hello, we’re glad you’re cruising with Coastliner 700’ on the cab door and a contravision advertisement on the rear for the Stagecoach bus app.

Stagecoach South Alexander Dennis Enviro300 27657 (GX10 KZK) on 14.58 service 1 (Pulborough-Midhurst, starting Worthing). Journey length 12miles in 27min.

Route 1 runs hourly Monday to Saturday with additional short workings within Worthing. It operates two-hourly on Sundays.
