HOW CAN WE CHANGE THE MINDSET OF EMPLOYEES?

While on my break on a driving duty I shouldn’t have been doing, I thought about the current state of the bus and coach industry.

For the second day running I’ve been driving because of drivers not turning up without warning. The driver for today was on his last day with us, having been promised a job at the largest PLC in Leeds, where he could get career progression. It’s true there are limited options for career progression at a small family-run business like ours, but you should still work your notice.

This poses a few questions, the first of which is why this large PLC will take on staff without any references being taken. There was a time a few years ago when every application to this plc led to a reference request being sent to the current employer. We never gave references, but that’s beside the point. All I would say was whether we would re-employ or not. It makes me wonder how many disappointed staff are at larger companies who were all promised the same for a handful of jobs that may exist somewhere in the far-off distance.
