Dublin Bus receives first hybrids

Wrightbus has supplied Dublin Bus with the first of nine hybrid double-deckers being evaluated as part of Transport for Ireland’s commitment to start phasing out the use of purely fossil-fuelled vehicles.

The three Wright StreetDeck HEV96 hybrids will be joined by three Wright Gemini 3-bodied Volvo B5LHs and three Alexander Dennis Enviro400Hs. The Enviro400Hs were being completed at the manufacturer’s Scarborough factory in late May, as the three Wright vehicles were delivered.

They are the first hybrids for a Republic of Ireland fleet and are painted in a special twotone green and yellow livery to advertise their environmental credentials.

TfI is about to begin a procurement process for the purchase of 600 hybrid double-deckers over a five-year period and hopes to place an order with one manufacturer before the end of the year. Most will be operated in Dublin, but some may also go to the regional cities of Cork, Galway and Limerick. The first could be delivered in 2020.

It also hopes to have pure electric doubledeckers operating in Cork within the next five years, but appears to have ruled out the purchase of biogas vehicles.
