“THE NEW FLYOVER FROM LONDON TO HEATHROW”

From November 1980 to the end of 2004, Airbus services connected central London to Heathrow airport. ROY WHYTE explains the complete history of the routes

As well as visiting The Queen’s Building at Heathrow Airport to watch the departing and arriving aircraft over the years, I could be found more regularly at the various incarnations of Heathrow Central Bus Station watching the many bus and coach arrivals and departures; National Express, Jetlink 747, Flightline 767, Green Line, Alder Valley and London Transport to name some of my favourites.

There were also the dedicated airport buses which ran from both the British European Airways (BEA) West London Air Terminal in Cromwell Road, Kensington, and the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) Terminal in Buckingham Palace Road, Victoria. The airport buses were dedicated to bringing passengers for specific flights, both venues at Kensington and Victoria having flight check-in facilities.

The West London Air Terminal began operations on October 6, 1957. BEA closed check-in facilities at the terminal on January 1, 1974, but airport buses would still be running from there to Heathrow until March 1979.
