I totally agree with Phil Stockley (Inside Track last month) on the importance of bus shelters.

In Leicester and Leicestershire, most of the 300-plus decent shelters are managed under contract by the French firm J. C. Decaux, which generally does a very good job. However, its contract is due for renewal this year and if it loses the contract it will probably remove all its shelters to use elsewhere. What will happen then?

Leicester City Council runs about 50 shelters in less well used locations, most of which are much scruffier than those from Decaux, and suffer from neglect.

Leicestershire County Council, meanwhile, has pulled out of bus shelter work completely, leaving this in the care of district or parish councils, which do not have the funds or expertise for this, so it is a complete lottery now.
