Nice to know how well informed our democratically elected representatives can be, I say with an edge of irony. While looking in on London recently, Mark Lyons came upon a discussion in the Greater London Assembly about express bus routes that suggested one senior politician’s grasp of history was not what it ought to be. A head of steam has been building lately to revive the idea of running faster bus routes in parts of London, as well as more orbital ones to offer a public transport alternative to the car that doesn’t require everyone to go through the middle of the Great Wen. Such ideas have been on and off the agenda for decades, but they’re on again just now. All of which prompted Steve O’Connell, the Conservatives’ assembly member for Croydon and Sutton to sing the praises of the X26, which went over to double-deckers last year and runs half-hourly between West Croydon and Heathrow Airport through said member…
