StreetDecks upgrade Monterrey’s Ecovia

Before its recent collapse and subsequent rescue from administration, Wrightbus also supplied recognisably British double-deckers for a Mexican BRT line, albeit on a smaller scale than Alexander Dennis. The Northern Ireland-based manufacturer has yet to produce its own tri-axle chassis — its substantial Far East export sales of such vehicles have been on Volvo models, most recently the B8L — but it sent a two-axle former London demonstration StreetDeck to Mexico in 2016/17. After touring the country, it returned to the UK and saw further use in London.

Subsequently it was a surprise to many in 2017 when Wrightbus supplied five righthand- drive StreetDecks with Euro6 Mercedes- Benz OM934 four-cylinder engines to the north-eastern city of Monterrey located in the state of Nuevo Leon, around 560miles north of Mexico City and 130miles south of the United States border. Like the Alexander Dennis order, this was supported in part by the UK Department of International Trade. It was worth US$2.7million (£2.1million).

Monterrey is a sprawling business and industrial centre fringed by mountains and with a population of 1.1million .
