LES LUMSDON explains why a users’ group has teamed up with Arriva Midlands and Shropshire County Council to help promote a scenic route connecting two market towns

Letters to Buses’ You Write section in recent months have highlighted examples of where local authorities have awarded contracts for the operation of supported noncommercial routes but then omit to publicise those routes’ existence, so it is notable that Bus Users Shropshire has joined forces with Arriva Midlands and Shropshire County Council to boost the use of one rural bus service.

The 576 operates six days a week between Shrewsbury and Oswestry via Bomere Heath, Baschurch, Ruyton XI Towns, Kinnerley, Knockin and Maesbury Marsh. It has been chosen for a trial to encourage more passengers on board because it links two attractive destinations, Shrewsbury and Oswestry, offers a scenic ride through pleasant countryside, is ideal for local walks from the villages and is sufficiently frequent to allow people to hop on and off at different places.
