In response to Jim Dunning’s comments (You Write, June) regarding rail being subsidised, resulting in buses losing out, and as someone who is affected by Stagecoach’s withdrawal from the Edinburgh-South Queensferry route, I make the following comments now that Lothian Country Buses operates the service, albeit in a different form.

Journey times: bus 40min; rail 15min.

Off-peak return fares: bus £5; rail £4.60.

This begs the question why anyone would use the bus for a basic return journey off-peak (when buses are less busy), which is what the vast majority of passengers at that time make, even although Lothian may argue that its Ridacard is available for regular passengers and that the £5 day ticket allows use all day.
