A chronic shortage of drivers is bedevilling Britain’s hardpressed bus and coach operators. Eager to play a leading role in representing the sector as well as promoting the interests of hauliers, the Road Haulage Association (RHA) estimates that the shortfall is from 5,000 to 10,000.

Shortages mean that services have to be cancelled, sometimes at short notice, vehicles have to be parked up because there is no-one who can take them out on the highway, and businesses are unable to grow to their full potential. Profitability is affected in an industry already suffering from squeezed margins.

The situation is unlikely to improve any time soon, the RHA contends, as older drivers retire, and new drivers fail to come onboard in sufficient numbers. While strategies such as setting up Skills Bootcamps to help individuals acquire Category D licences may go some way towards addressing the crisis, they are of little benefit to, say, a coach firm that needs half-a-dozen drivers today.
