The offer of a day’s unlimited bus travel across North and Mid Wales for £5.70 proves irresistible to JOHN YOUNG, who spends a weekend sampling the region’s bus services

The recently launched 1 Bws ticket, allowing a day’s unlimited bus travel by all operators across a swathe of North and Mid Wales for the bargain price of £5.70, started me thinking about the opportunities it presented. Initially I had a vision of a rather ambitious day trip, but quickly realised that this was going to have to be undertaken over two days with an overnight stop.

Our first day started at Gresford, on the route of Arriva Cymru service 1 (Chester – Wrexham). The bus stop displays a timetable from 2015 in a dirty case – hardly a good advert for public transport. After a short wait, we boarded bus 1006, one of the batch of impressive Alexander Dennis Enviro400 MMC Citys, with bilingual next stop announcements, USB charging points and tables upstairs. Our driver is slightly unsure how to issue our ticket initially but manages to find it on his ticket machine. We pay by contactless card; the price we have paid will cover all our travel needs for the day.
