Large-scale competition has broken out and intensified to the west of Edinburgh, with Lothian Country’s green fleet challenging the blue (and other colours) of First Scotland East in Livingston, Bathgate and other West Lothian communities. DAVID JENKINS spent a day in July observing the action

Lothian Buses is in an expansive mood. When deregulation brought SMT, the predecessor of First Scotland East, into competition within Edinburgh in 1986, Lothian responded with services extending beyond the city’s boundaries.
