With a ticket booked to Lerwick as a foot passenger on the overnight ferry from Aberdeen last spring, I took to the internet to ascertain whether I would be able to reach attractions across the islands by service bus rather than falling back on a hire car. An internet search led me to two websites, which somewhat confusingly operate in parallel.

I began with the Shetland Travel Information website at www.travel.shetland.org provided by ZetTrans and Promote Shetland, providing timetables for buses, ferries and inter-island flights.
