In last month’s review of Henry Conn’s 1979 album from Silver Link, I reassured readers that there were plenty of other books with pictures of the last day of London Transport’s RTs in Barking in April 1979, an event he mentioned but did not illustrate. You need look no farther than this next title in the publisher’s Nostalgia Collection series.

The cover photograph — repeated inside as a smaller image — shows RT624, the final example in public service, a few days before the big event, which Michael Baker also attended and photographed, most strikingly with a view of RT1 surrounded by camerawielding enthusiasts.

Baker’s artistic talents mean that many of the photographs — colour and black and white — capture a lot more than simply the familiar lines of the London bus types around in the 1960s and 1970s. People, traffic, buildings, foliage, flowers and in one case a ploughed field are more prominent than the vehicles.
