Lynx and Regal showcased at SVBM
The newly restored sole survivor of the only 12 dual-door Leyland Lynx built for the UK made its first appearance at the Scottish Vintage Bus Museum’s open weekend on 18/19 August.
Lothian Region Transport 188 (H188 OSG), powered by a horizontal Cummins L10 engine, was new in 1991 and on being sold nine years later to Brylaine Travel in Boston, Lincolnshire it was converted to a single-door layout and re-registered XAZ 1399. Brylaine took it out of service in 2006 and began cannibalising it for parts.
Current owner Calum Melrose acquired it 10 years ago, had it towed 312miles back to Scotland and has restored it to original condition, fitting it with a new set of original specification seats and reinstating the centre exit, complete with bulkheads, using wiring, doors and other mechanism from other Lynx.
Another recent restoration on show at the same event was Alexander A104 (DMS 130), a 1951 AEC Regal III with manual gearbox and 8ft wide 35-seat Alexander coach body. This was one of the last six Regals built for the Scottish Bus Group, their chassis having been ordered by Sutherland of Peterhead before Alexander acquired the company in 1950.
