OS and Kithead discuss archive merger

The Omnibus Society and Kithead Trust are in negotiations to merge their archives of material recording the history of buses in the UK from the days of horse traction.

Kithead was established to preserve historic material from the National Bus Company and is based in Droitwich. Its archivist, Philip Kirk, has also taken over as OS archivist. He succeeds the late Alan Mills, in whose memory the OS library in Walsall has been named.

The OS collection includes tens of thousands of timetables, 200,000 tickets dating from 1870 to the present day and around 1.5million photographs. The collection began in 1942 when the late John Parke, Buses Illustrated and Buses editor from 1965 to 1980, began gathering timetables at his home in Sevenoaks.
