Passenger numbers began to slip in mid December, according to DfT figures for England, publication of which was suspended across the holiday period.

The latest and more infectious variant of Covid, Omicron, caused the UK government to introduce a 'Plan B' of counteractive measures, including an instruction to return to working from home in England if possible.

A requirement for infected people to isolate has also taken its toll on staff numbers, with operators again forced to cancel services or introduce temporary timetables.
