Raising safety standards, changing people’s travel habits, improving service delivery and meeting tough financial targets are among the challenges that Claire Mann, Transport for London’s director of bus operations, is addressing, as she tells MARK LYONS

The Bus Safety Standard takes account of the conditions in which London buses share streets with other vehicles and pedestrians, as in this scene at Oxford Circus. Claire Mann accepts that pedestrians sometimes ‘will still do daft stuff’.

She may be a relative newcomer to buses, but Claire Mann has worked in the transport sector for over 20 years since joining Heathrow Express as a train driver in 1997.
