DAVID JENKINS samples the services of one of the last six arms length municipal companies left running in England and is reminded that small parts of the 1970s showpiece Runcorn busway either have no buses on them or are open for all traffic to use

Halton Transport 37 (DK03 NTD), one of 21 East Lancs Myllennium-bodied 11.3m TransBus or Alexander Dennis Darts, leaving Warrington for Widnes on route 62. The town’s Debenhams department store stands above this exit and entrance to the bus station. Despite being the company’s standard bus from 2002 to 2005, none appeared on journeys that David Jenkins made. JOHN YOUNG
