Many readers of mature years will recognise Tim Machin’s description of his youth. He is 60 this year, grew up in Brown Edge and Kidsgrove in a household that depended on buses, was attracted by the sights and sounds (especially of PMT’s vee-engined Daimler Roadliners) that passed his bedroom window in Kidsgrove and on starting school found a friend who shared his interest.

That friend was Martyn Hearson, who went on to preserve buses as well as spot and photograph them. Both left school to work for Berresfords Motors at Cheddleton and Machin has held clerical, managerial and driving posts with several operators in the area.
