Deliveries by market leader Alexander Dennis of its Cummins diesel-engined Enviro400 fell by more than a third last year, taking its market share to just below 40% compared with 57% in 2018.

More than a third of these were hybrids for Abellio, Arriva and Stagecoach in London. Go-Ahead’s Brighton & Hove fleet remained the only UK customer for the recently introduced Enviro400ER electric range hybrid, receiving a repeat order for 24. Alexander Dennis also builds this model for the Republic of Ireland.

Stagecoach was again the biggest customer for the Enviro400, accounting for 40% of deliveries, 46% of them for TfL contracts. Fifty-five were in build when the first lockdown suspended production in the spring; all but three of them were for Stockport depot in Greater Manchester. Next came Go-Ahead with 71 for various regional subsidiaries, 17 of them for its expanded operation in Cornwall. A new customer was Transdev which purchased 19 with coach seats for limited stop Witchway and Cityzap services in Lancashire and Yorkshire.
