JOHN YOUNG spent a week in the summer making good use of the revived First Kernow network, experiencing vehicles ranging from short wheelbase Optare Solos to high-specification Alexander Dennis Enviro400 MMCs, with some late life Tridents thrown in for good measure

The first week of July is an excellent choice to reacquaint myself with Cornwall. The weather is excellent, it is Catch The Bus Week so I can do my bit for the environment as I enjoy using public transport to rediscover places after 20 years or more, and it is the end of term for Truro College, whose impressive transport commitment I want to see firsthand.

Unlike only a few years ago, First provides most mainstream bus services in large parts of the county. Branded as First Kernow, it has made a major effort to improve the quality, image and delivery of its services.
