Berlin takes double-deckers off top tourist route

As BVG orders first Ebuscos

Berlin transit operator BVG is withdrawing double-deckers from the iconic 100 line which passes many of the city’s major landmarks and is popular with visitors and locals alike.

The move comes after engineers said the roof of a former tramway tunnel located beneath Unter den Linden boulevard on the eastern section of the route can no longer take the weight of heavy vehicles.

No date has been given for the switchover which will take place after new signs have been put up banning access to lorries weighing over 18 tonnes. The affected road section has already been reinforced with concrete and in future articulated buses will ply the 100 since these have a better weight distribution owing to a greater distance between their axles
