The island of Anglesey will be transformed from a backwater into a showcase of how public transport can be improved in rural areas, if the recommendations of a recent commission are implemented. RHODRI CLARK reports

A 7.5t weight limit was imposed on the Menai Suspension Bridge in June 2022. Remedial works have still not finished and bus passengers have a time-consuming diversion over the Britannia Bridge. In happier times, Arriva Optare Solo 682 (CX09 BFN) arrives on the mainland with a service from Amlwch to Bangor in April 2012.

Anglesey, or Ynys Môn, currently has the air of a public transport backwater. Even the London to Holyhead trains depend on crossing keepers emerging from signal boxes to move gates. The island’s smaller stations have a sparse service, and three are remote from the nearest village.

Bus stops generally look neglected, and timetable posters can be years out of date. Buses between the island and mainland are currently prohibited from their usual crossing point, the Menai Suspension Bridge, while bridge components are renewed. The diversion over the Britannia Bridge lengthens journey times and operating costs.
